CHRISTMAS CHEER

Seems everyone is in the festive mood with many anglers unwilling or maybe not allowed to go fishing this past week. If you are one of those not out on the water, have you missed out big time.

Cunningham Pier here in Geelong has fired right up with good numbers of Snotty Trevalla taking chicken baits early morning and evenings. Flathead can also be taken off the pier at present with blue bait doing the trick nicely.

The Royal Geelong Yacht Club wall is also worth your time if you have the boat as with a little berley you will have the fish screaming reels.

Fishing around the boat moorings between the yacht club and Eastern Beach trevalla, salmon, flathead, pike and small pinkies have all been taken by soft plastics anglers, gulp minnows and worms are all you need here at present.

North shore rocks has still produced some quality pike to me using Braid Mauler baitfish profile slugs, evening are always best, the past week with the high tides has made it difficult unless you wear waders.

Grammer School Lagoon on the high tides has continued to be productive on soft plastics with worm patters clearly the favorite. Flathead and salmon dominate captures with the odd bream thrown in as a bonus.

Bird Rock/ Point Lillias has been red hot land based with both bait and lures working a treat. This area fishes its best of an evening and it’s always a bonus if you have the high tides as well.

Fishing the Stingaree Spoil grounds this week saw whiting averaging 33cms on pippies and snapper between 25 and 40cms on soft plastics. Evenings are the go and this will continue to be the case over the month or so.

The outer harbour spoils have been the best producers on soft plastics with fish between 30 and 50cms readily available, yes soft plastics such as Gulp 4 inch minnows are the go here. Quality flathead and pike will also keep you busy as will the small salmon that seem to be holding up in this area.

Bait anglers are getting amongst the snapper in 18 plus metres of water off St Leonards, the run off tide has been producing the best results, this area also has seen some nice bags of flathead.

Edwards Point and Swan Bay are difficult to pass up with snapper, gummy shark, flathead, garfish and squid holding in good numbers, berley is a must here with early morning, evening and the run off from high tide clearly the time to fish.

Queenscliff Cut has seen few anglers chasing the trevally but for those that have fish to 2kg have been landed. Turtle back worms have been best with Mojo Curl tails a close second. An hour either side of high tide is my favorite.

Offshore has seen some nice snapper feeding with Torquay resident Shane Korth landing the best I know of to date, at over 9kg and over a metre long this fish could have easily made the magic 10kg weight if it had been feeding in the same paddock as its captor.

Surf anglers should hit Black Rock of an evening, fish from the Sand Dunes to Breamlea but cast as far as possible, best results come from those that can cast 90 metres or better, squid has been the bait.

A mate of mine has been casting lures from the rocks at Cinema Point just past Eastern View and salmon to 1.5kg he has been landing, low tide running up has been best, bait anglers have been landing no where near the numbers of fish as he has on lure.

Fairhaven Beach of an evening has also produced salmon to 1kg, fish close to the reef at the Airys Inlet end of the beach and use lures as small as possible.

Freshwater is always GREAT over the summer months, with redfin the number one capture from the Barwon River, fish to 1kg are available on both live minnow and lures. As the weather heats up look to fish the deeper areas of the river, and only of an evening for the best results. Carp are another favorite and can be caught quite easily on bread or corn, berley an area and fish it over a few days, each day your results will improve.

Here at TACKLE WORLD GEELONG we would like to wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS & A FANTASTIC NEW YEAR, we will be closed Christmas Day and re open on Monday 28th. So bring in your gift vouchers from Monday before they burn a hole in your pocket.
